» Peck bird information manager application 6.5.1 Description

Now with audio search capabilities, the Peck Bird Information Manager integrates photographs, recordings, etymology, checklists, identification tips and species assessment data into four visually simple but highly integrated lists.

    • The AOU list, defined by the AOU (American Ornithologists’ Union), lists species within a hierarchical classification. Since the AOU list is rather lengthy (2232 items in its hierarchy), you may find it convenient to localize it to the checklist from your state's bird records committee. Presently Peck includes checklists for 43 states (AK, AL, AR, AZ, CA, CT, DE, FL, GA, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MS, MT, NC, NE, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, VT, WA, WI, WV) and six Canadian provinces (AV, MB, NB, NL, ON, YT).

    • The document list displays the names of documented species (approximately the list of species that breed in North America).

    • The audio list displays the names of species or mnemonics (if available) of calls or songs.

    • The bird conservation region list displays the 37 bird conservation regions, as defined by the North American Bird Conservation Initiative, covering the continental United States.

There are two components to the Peck Bird Information Manager:

    • the Peck application - this freeware assists with searching through the bird reference information and the multimedia content, which is not required by the Peck application but without the multimedia content only the AOU list, identification tips, and life history descriptions will be available.

    • the Peck multimedia content - a compilation of recordings, photographs, and etymology. The multimedia content comes in a Public Domain and a proprietary version. The Public Domain multimedia content is free and includes about 400 photographs and 180 recordings. The proprietary multimedia content is not free but has about twice the number of photographs, three times the number of recordings, and the etymology for the names of 736 species.

    Updated Description:

    version 6.5.1
Fixed database error that excluded 1st photograph of 1st species in database (Cooper's hawk). Fixed potential buffer overflow problem triggered by many photographs per species. And fixed photograph caption display problem triggered by empty caption in user photograph filename.

    version 6.4.4
Added more "similar sounding" species information to audio database. Automated localization of custom checklist based upon state abbreviation in /Eduneer/Admin/state.txt. And finally, revived "way-back" compatibility with devices such as m105 and Vx.

    version 6.4.3
Added an alternative peck-Installer.prc for LifeDrive devices to avoid the creation of multiple /Eduneer directories. Fixed AOU list initialization problem that caused the delay of the presentation of the AOU list. Now that delay will occur only when data affecting the current AOU list mode has occurred. Also fixed audio list's event handler so that the volume control is consistently displayed (previously, on some models such as the T5, the volume control was not redrawn after being covered by a dialog).

    version 6.4.2
Started implementation of the namesake feature: the Peck audio search that allows you to search for bird songs by pecking (i.e., "drawing") the bird song on the touch screen. Also, completed mistakenly unfinished user interface to audio identification tips ('I' icon in audio list). And finally, I changed icon highlighting so a highlighted photo icon (i.e., 'P') denotes there is a similar looking species and a highlighted audio icon (i.e., 'A') denotes there is a similar sounding species.

    version 6.4.1
Improved user photograph search capabilities: the user photograph filenames now require a view specification (i.e., viewed from above, below, front, rear, side). Also, changed default sort order for document and audio lists to alphabetical (as opposed to AOU classification) order. And by popular demand, included a 'Getting Started' manual.
